Last survey of the day requested for 6.45pm in Dorchester for damp issues in the front room. After talking to the customer about the history of the property i could start to build up a picture in my mind of what was causing the damp problem.

After inspection found that this property has no floor membrane and that the 9 inch wall has no DPC. Also the property is built on chalk and is close to the water table. After talking to the customer i was able to explain and demonstrate how we could prevent rising damp in the floor and walls.

And most importantly stop it from coming back.

Today was a follow visit for one of my customers in Bournemouth. They have rats in the cavity walls, which makes getting at them a bit of a challenge. But luckily for them there was an enclosed area just below in the cellar were they had dug out and could also get water. In this area we were able to use catch traps and baits to quickly control the problem. Six rats have so far been caught and taken away, this helps reduce the chances of dead animals dying in the walls.

It’s that time of the year again and the local mice population is moving into our homes again due to the cold wet weather conditions. My last customer thought they had elephant mice because the amount of noise coming from the loft at night. I explained that mice hoard things they collect all sorts and make little piles. These little collections can be building rubble, screws, cigarette ends, loft insulation, cable ends and straw, in fact any thing they can carry and that’s why there so noisy. They are just in your loft or attic having a great time. The problem with mice in numbers over long periods is that because mice are incontinent they urinate and leave droppings all over you possessions that you have stored in the loft and it smells.

We quickly brought the problem to and end and mostly used mouse traps so heavily reduced the need to use to much poison, which is always good.

Completed another woodworm survey in Weymouth, nice 1930′s period property with large cut roof. Started the inspection and it was clear that furniture beetle was active in this roof space. The emergence holes were circular, 1 – 2 mm in diameter. And tunnels circular, 1 – 2 mm in diameter. Extensive and random orientation but mainly in direction of grain. And the bore dust was cream in colour and felt gritty between the fingers. So i showed the customer the evidence that i had collected and recommended a course of action to remove the problem. This work was also backed by our 30 yr Guarantee.

One of Verminate’s customers in Poole, Dorset had this problem. This was a victorian semi-detached house and the damp was due to a failed damp-proof course.

Not to worry, Verminate quoted 5 days labour starting Monday to: Clear room, including carpet and prepare the walls and remove any sockets in the way; remove the plaster and inject inside and out. Apply water proof render, re-plaster and fit new skirting boards. We finished on-time Friday afternoon and cleaned up from the works, finally we carefully moved the furniture back.

The damp has now gone and for a let less than the homeowner was expecting to pay.

Verminate promise NEVER to quote or suggest unnecessary work, we survey and suggest what work should be undertaken to address the damp, Verminate is a local company built on customer referrals.
